The heads of Kraft Curing
1975
Founding of the Company in Arlington, Texas
Vapor Energy is founded with just one product - the Vaporator® direct-fired steam generator, initially used to heat and liquify heavy oil during the Texas oil boom.1980
Concrete Curing Application
As the Texas oil boom subsides, Vapor Energy searches for new applications for the direct-fired steam generator. Opportunities in climatizing of greenhouses and disinfection of railroad box cars are tested and quickly forgotten as the company focuses on the first accelerated curing system for concrete pipe at the CSR Pipe Plant in Grand Prairie, Texas. Vaporator Model 001 is a great success due to a 50% reduction in energy costs compared to the steam boiler it replaced and is quickly followed by models 002 and 003, of which two remain in operation to today.1981-1988
Company Growth
Due to the energy and operating cost savings, the vapor generator gradually replaces steam boilers in concrete block, precast, pipe and prestress factories throughout North America as well as in Thailand and Singapore. By 1990, over 300 units are in operation.1988
Conditioning Animal Feed
Vapor is introduced via the APC (Anaerobic Pasteurizing and Conditioning) System into the flaking and pelleting process resulting in the elimination of salmonella bacteria and an increase in digestibility resulting in healthier livestock and accelerated maturity.1990
European Market
Newly introduced European animal welfare and food safety regulations create a strong market for the APC System to combat salmonella in animal feed in the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Austria. A newly formed partnership, Awila VE Mühlen- und Dampfanlagen GmbH, in Lastrup (Oldenburg) – a real mouthful - provides a manufacturing and service base in Germany. Europeanizing the vapor generator according to the multitude of regulations in a non-harmonized early European Union was a costly challenge for the small company.1994
International Growth
A total of 20 APC Systems are commissioned throughout Europe before the animal welfare and food safety regulations are repealed leading to a dramatic reversal in sales and renewing the focus on concrete curing systems manufactured in Germany. The widely accepted practice of accelerated concrete curing in North America is virtually unknown in Europe. High energy prices, taxes on energy and operating costs associated with traditional steam boilers had made curing uneconomical. The compact and efficient vapor generator rejuvenated the curing process and leads to the commissioning of over 100 “made in Germany” curing systems in Europe and as far away as Japan, Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh.1999
Innovations
As sales climb, the renamed Kraft Energy continues to develop ancillary curing components. European customers are not satisfied with a source of heat, the vapor generator, but also expect a complete curing solution including curing enclosures such as insulated chambers and retractable tents, durable vapor distribution systems, money-saving automated controls and accurate sensors.2000
Quadrix
The first iteration of Quadrix®, a curing system designed with independent control of temperature and relative humidity, is introduced and becomes the industry standard to meet the specialized curing requirements for concrete pavers, kerbs and roof tiles.2000-2005
Reestablishment in the USA
Kraft enters the North American market with the first sale of a “made in Germany” vapor generator to Precast Systems. A sales and service office and warehouse is opened in Fort Worth, Texas. As the popularity of concrete plant automation grows, Kraft introduces Convect-Air® and ThermalCure® curing systems capable of operating at lower relative humidity and drying capability and the Nautilus® air circulation system. The popularity of these new systems in combination with interest in turn-key curing solutions including curing enclosures lead to an enormous surge in activity.2009
Growing Project Scope
In 2009, KRAFT completes its largest project to date with the completion of the curing facilities for the manufacturing of the cement-coated anti-buoyancy pipe in the Baltic Sea, operating as Nord Stream.2013
Surviving the Crisis
In 2013, Kraft Curing emerges out of the international financial and home mortgage crisis with its production facility and main offices in Germany and sales and service warehouse in North America. The launch of QUADRIX® II, the most consistent curing environment available in the industry with low air velocity, takes place at BAUMA 2013.2015
International Infrastructure Projects
Kraft secures further curing system orders for large international infrastructure projects, including tunnel segments for Stuttgart 21 and the Paris Metro, cement-coated anti-buoyancy pipes for Nord Stream II, bridge decks and beams for the Tappan Zee and Bay Bridges in North America.2016
BAUMA Exjibition
Kraft celebrates over 1000 curing systems at the BAUMA international construction exhibition in Munich, Germany with two stands; a meeting area inside and, in BAUMA first, an operational single atmosphere curing chamber outside – giving potential customers the opportunity to experience the perfect curing climate live.2018
Fire
On June 18, 2018, fire destroys the newly renovated production building and offices. The following day, Kraft assembles one of its own retractable curing enclosures and resumes production inside while the fire damaged buildings are demolished and removed. Offices are replaced by containers and extra energy is poured into maintaining production and rebuilding.2019
New Home
The offices and enlarged new factory is completed end of 2019. There were no doubts that the new factory would be large enough for several years. Within 3 years Kraft was bursting at the seams. The first patented Kraft Rack with integrated Quadrix system is installed in the spring at Betonwerk Godelmann in southern Germany and a small operational version is displayed at the 2019 BAUMA construction exhibition.2020
Pandemic vs. International Projects
Besides the covid pandemic, 2020 is marked by large infrastructure projects bookended with the London to Birmingham HS2 project in the UK and the Snowy Scheme in Australia. Over the next 4 years, Kraft would support three additional HS2 projects in the UK with vapor curing systems for tunnel and bridge segments. 2020 marks the first year of multi-year contracts to build and/or modernize curing chambers for one of Germany’s largest concrete products manufacturers.2021
Match-Cure Quality Control System
Kraft develops the Match-Cure system, enabling prestress concrete manufacturers the ability to confirm the strength and assure the quality of their concrete elements and allowing for the shortest possible de-tensioning time.2021
Kraft® Racks Patent
Kraft Curing Systems receives first a European and then an American patent on its innovative rack design, making it the only true curing rack on the market.2022
CO2 TestCube
Kraft, with over 30 years CO2 curing experience, develops the CO2 TestCube, the first mobile test chamber for experimenting with heat, relative humidity, and carbon-dioxide parameters and their influence on concrete strength, durability and appearance as well as quantifying the CO2 sequestration potential of various concrete product geometries and mix designs.2022
Health Protection and Occupational Safety
As 2022 winds to a close, Kraft installs its first soundproof enclosure for a concrete block machine and machine operator room. The enclosure provides a safe and extremely quiet environment in the production area and serves to ensure occupational safety and health protection for everyone working there. Some details are needed.2023
Growth
With a total of 55 employees in Germany, 45 in Poland, 7 in North America and 4 in India, Kraft Curing supports over 1700 installations in 69 countries. Combined sales of €23 million, spare parts inventory in Germany of €2 million, the support of 10 service engineers and spare parts inventory in North America of 0.9 million and 3 service engineers and 3 service engineers in India as well as our deep commitment to our customers’ satisfaction and success makes Kraft Curing a trustworthy partner.Products
